It’s been a while since we heard anything about the Made in Abyss game Binary Star Falling into Darknessbut we now have a new trailer and it doesn’t look great.
Developed by Spike Chunsoft, the game is using Unreal Engine and will be coming to both Switch and the PlayStation 4.
It’s effectively an action role-playing game, but will also have its own story penned by the creator of the original manga, Akihito Tsukushi.
The characters and setting look spot on to the anime and manga, even the monsters look good. However, the same cannot be said for the environments. As these look very out of date, with texture tiling all over the place.
It’s weird, there are a lot of savvy Unreal Engine developers in Japan now, but the environments in this game look very basic. I mean, one decent technical artist could have made the world of difference here.
If you are unfamiliar with Made in Abyss, it is both a brilliant manga and anime. Riko is a Cave Raider and lives alongside the Abyss, a seemingly endless chasm filled with technology from long lost civilizations. On her journey to find her missing mother, she meets Reg, a robot boy with immense power.
The story is based around Riko and Reg as they work together to traverse the depths of the Abyss, with all the huge dangers and wonders that entails.
The manga and anime are a genuinely fascinating works of unbridled imagination, so I had high hopes for this game. It still turn out to be a solid game, but for now it looks like it needs a lot more work.
Binary Star Falling into Darkness will be released this Fall for Switch and PlayStation 4.
